Barber chair as therapy for bad scores at TPC Sawgrass!

From 1977 to 1981, THE PLAYERS Championship was hosted by Sawgrass Country Club, which is located right across the street - State Road A1A - from the Stadium Course. Sawgrass CC was a tough test, partial because of high winds. In 1979 the winning score was 5 under par but the event is remembered for the Saturday and Sunday weather, when scoring average were 77.5 and 78.6 respectively! Inside the Sawgrass clubhouse was a fancy barber´s chair used by members who would get their haircut at the club. TOUR players, however, began using it as therapy chair when they scored a double digit number on a hole. “Tradition has it that players who have had a bad round sit in it while being grilled by fellow competitors,” reads a plaque at the chair’s base. When the event was moved to its current home at TPC Sawgrass, the PGA commissioner made sure that the chair was moved too. It was forgotten for years but in 2006 – when the new majestic, Mediterranean-style clubhouse reopened after a 32 million makeover – the famed barber chair had a prominent spot just inside the entrance of the champions´ locker room. Past PLAYERS champions are listed on the walls behind the chair.
