The TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course – home of the PGA TOUR’s signature event, THE PLAYERS Championship – will undergo a handful of changes following the completion of the 2016 event in mid-May.
Among the adjustments will be a redesign of the 12th hole to create a drivable par 4 that will provide additional excitement on the back nine during THE PLAYERS.
Currently 358 yards on the scorecard, the 12th is already the shortest par 4 on the course. During the 2015 PLAYERS, Bubba Watson (first and third rounds) and Jason Day (first round) were the only players credited with an attempt to go for the green, but none of their three drives were successful.
Watson had the longest drive of any player at the 12th when his third-round tee shot went 314 yards, landing in the front section of the large bunker guarding the green.
The 12th played to a stroke average of 3.956 during the 2015 event, making it the easiest par 4 on the course and one of just two par 4s (the 6th being the other) to play under par. No official word yet on the yardage for the shortened hole, which will make its tournament debut at THE PLAYERS in 2017.
"The redesigned 12th hole will add an element of excitement early on the back nine which we expect will be well-received by contestants, spectators and television viewers around the world," said TOUR Executive Vice President and Chief of Operations. Andy Pazder.
